It is now a full day after the Nintendo 3DS has launched and I got to put my hands on one. It was a brief experience unfortunately.
The design is much like the DSi, it has a great feel to it. It keeps its pocketable dimensions, however the top hinge is kinda bulky. The analog nub is solid, very good quality, and it makes gameplay great (This control alone makes Ocarina of Time 3D worth it, on a D-pad it would be difficult to control such games). The buttons are also upgraded, they have a good feel to them and again are solid and make me feel that there will be no frustration with input. As a whole the device feels better than its older brother the DS Lite, it even feels more solid than a DSi.
Now let’s get down to the meat and bones, the 3D! As you might have read from numerous gaming, tech and gadget blogs…The 3D looks as if you are looking into a very awesome shoebox diorama, It really gives games awesome depth. Pilotwings resort looks awesome in 3D, and Super Street Fighter again looks awesome. While I was toying with the device, I did not notice a terrible loss of quality if I moved out of the sweet spot. Its something that over time all of those who own one will learn where the image works best in 3D. I must say that in the wrong lighting the image is worse off than if you left the sweet spot.
I must say I am impressed with the device. It is a must buy for Nintendo Handheld fans. I do not recommend it to those who are casual handheld gamers, stick to the DSi for now. There is not enough games on the market to make it worth you while if its something you are not a fanatic over. I would say to those who want to get one but are questioning things, wait til E3, Nintendo’s presser will answer a lot of questions surrounding the future of the 3DS.
Nintendo has hit yet another home run. 5/5
